The Gosnells Hawks Football Club created history last Sunday when another senior team represented the club. The new team competes in the Metropolitan Football League. The club already has 3 senior and an aged team (colts) that compete in the Western Australian Amateur Football League.
In a few weeks the Women’s Hawks team will make its inaugural appearance for the club. The growth of the Gosnells Hawks Football Club can be attributed to hard work and dedication by its management and volunteers over a number of years. A few years ago the club struggled for numbers with players having to “double up” and play two games on the same fixture and games were forfeited because of lack of numbers.
A decision to lift the profile of the club in the community by the previous committees has resulted in the club winning awards from the WAAFL, the City of Gosnells and Clubs WA. The club has also raised money for charities, $20,919 for beyondblue and $11,786 for the Cancer Council of WA over the last four years. The hard work has resulted in an influx of footballers wanting to join a friendly and progressive club.
The Gosnells Hawks Football Club has some of the best facilities in the competition which is an attraction to new members. President Michael McCaughan said that he is extremely happy with the progress of the club over the last few years. When other clubs are struggling, the Gosnells Hawks Football Club is increasing its membership and profile in the community. The club is in a healthy financial position and the addition of solar panels, office extension and renovations to the cool room in the next few weeks will improve the already excellent facilities for members.
The Gosnells Metropolitan Football League team under coach Stewart Divitini defeated Safety Bay by 15 points. Better players were Taylor Di Carlo, Matthew Hopewell , Chris Kessell and Kyle Wood (8 goals). Final scores Gosnells 15.12 (102) Safety Bay 12.15 (87).
The league team had an interesting game with Carlisle winning by 9 points after holding a healthy lead half way through the last quarter. Best for the Hawks were Jacob Smith, Luke Chapman, Eric Mitchell and Robert Davis. Final scores Gosnells 9.15 (69) Carlisle 9.6 (60). The reserves have started the season in spectacular fashion with another easy victory defeating Carlisle by 88 points. Brayden Watkins, Nathan Hansen and Travis Sansom played well for the Hawks.
Final scores Gosnells 17.10 (112) Carlisle 3.6 (24).The colts team tried hard but went down by 91 points. Stefan Little, Trenanye Hodder, Coree Thomson and Tom Stevens were better players. Final scores Carlisle 17.16 (118) Gosnells 4.3 (27).
This week all WAAFL teams are home to the Willetton Football Club at Gosnells Oval, Terence Street, Gosnells and games are dedicated to the ANZAC tradition. There will be a presentation of the BARRATT/HANSEN ANZAC MEDAL to the best Gosnells player after the league game. Interested members of the community are invited to Gosnells Oval for a remembrance ceremony at 2.15 pm. An afternoon tea will be provided by the ladies committee for members and visitors at 2.30 pm.
The Metro Football League team play Queens Park at Birralee Reserve, Bates Road, Innaloo at 2.30 pm on Sunday. Entrance to all games is free.
