The Gosnells Hawks Football League Team remains the only unbeaten team in C1 Division of the WAAFL with a 14 point victory over rivals Bassendean last Saturday. The Hawks were in control for most of the day to hold off a determined opponent in the last quarter. Final scores were Gosnells 15.8 (98) Bassendean 12.12 (84). Zac Ridley, Josh Hall, Hayden Yarran and Dean Stauborg were best for Gosnells. The reserves again failed to live up to expectations and went down in a close game by 6 points. Coach Steve Davis is confident his team can bounce back in the next few weeks. Final scores were Bassendean 5.10 (40) Gosnells 5.4 (34). Chris Kessell playing his first game in the reserves this year was best with Matthew Hopewell, Nathan Hansen and Nathaniel Reid all playing well for the Hawks.
The thirds under new coach Sam Parker have been the surprise packet this year with four straight wins on the board and his team is appearing to enjoy their football together. It will be interesting to follow the progress of this team after it has displayed such a promising start to the season. Final scores were Gosnells 14.12 (96) Belmont 5.3 (33). Best were Dan Fitzgerald, Kyle Wood, Sol Isa and Taylor Millsteed.
The colt’s team continue to struggle against older and bigger opponents. The WAAFL Colt’s structure is for 16-20 year olds to be eligible to play in that competition. The Gosnells team is made up of mostly young first year players and they find it difficult to match up against other clubs with more experienced players. Final scores were Bassendean 21.21 (147) Gosnells 3.3 (21). Tom Stevens, Jack Phillis, Aiden Gray and Liam Adams performed well.
The Hawks women’s team performed well but lost by a solitary point to University. Final scores were University 2.4 (16) Gosnells 2.3 (15). Best were Telsha Steenson, Elisha Bettenary, Maddie Briggs and Janine Ragno.
The Metro League team played an excellent brand of football and won a very high standard and exciting game by 1 point. Swan District legend Tallan Ames made his debut for the Gosnells Hawks and showed why he was such a highly regarded player in the WAFL. Others to play well were Coree Thomson, Ethan Barry, Dennis Luffman and Max Websdale.
Young players Coree Thomson has been selected in the WAAFL’s under 23 team and Trenayne Hodder in the colt’s team.
This Saturday the league, reserves and colt’s are home to Kenwick. The thirds and women have a bye with the Metro League playing at Dwellingup at 1.00 pm on Sunday.
