Last weekend the West Australian Amateur Football League held its NAIDOC round which is an annual celebration in recognition of the contribution that indigenous footballers have made to the sport.
The Gosnells Football Club commissioned talented local artist Tamara Hayden to design an indigenous themed jumper for players to wear during games played by the Hawks for last weekend’s fixtures.
The club’s committee decided that all six teams will wear the jumper in games this year. Last Saturday the league team wore the jumper in a victory over Quinns District and on Sunday the Hawks women’s team (pictured) were successful in their game against Forrestdale.
It is appropriate that the women wore the jumper because NAIDOC 2018 theme is “because of Her We Can” which recognises the significant role, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played and continue to play in the community at local, state and national levels.
