Gosnells Football & Sports Club stalwart George Leathley received the prestigious award at Clubs WA annual awards ceremony held at Crown Perth last Saturday.

George was recognised for over 50 years of service to the Gosnells Football Club and selected from nominations received from 47 clubs across the state.

George started his service as a player but quickly realised he would best serve the club as an administrator as he spent most of his games on the bench for the reserves team and saw very little game time. In those days he regarded himself as a “picket kicker” a person who spends his time on the boundary looking over the picket fence.

George has contributed to the success of the football club by working in every position except president. At present he is club auditor, statistician, co-author of the Annual Report, manages umpire needs on home games and helps with financial and clerical duties.

George is a Life Member of the Gosnells Football Club and has received two awards from the West Australian Football Commission for service to football.

The Gosnells Football Club was also recognised as a community based sporting club being selected as a finalist in categories of “Clubs in the community – Special Projects Award” “and “Clubs in the Community – Community Partnerships Award” at the Clubs WA function.
